Being involved in sports (especially such active and fun sport like soccer):
- Children stay fit (which helps them lead a healthy and more productive life);
- Most children do better academically;
- The friendships, experiences and fun created through playing the game extend well beyond the soccer pitch and stay for a lifetime;
- Families are brought together even closer to share their member’s soccer experiences;
- Children are kept “off the street” and away from temptations (i.e. drugs, cigarettes, etc.) and the list goes on and on with potentially many more benefits.

But what if you have dreams beyond playing just “recreational” soccer? What if the young soccer player in you has really big dreams? What if you want to make the starting line-up of a High School Varsity team, play for Division I College, or even turn pro and play in a World Cup some day? So let’s say you’ve worked extremely hard and already developed strong physical and technical skills, as well as good tactical awareness to perform at a high level. The last “piece of the puzzle” is not such an obvious and therefore very frequently overlooked component. Interestingly enough, it is the most important one! It is the power of the mind – it’s the psychological component. Therefore, the secret of going as far as possible in your sport, and the difference between poor, good & great performances is in the degree of mental toughness.
I’ve been involved in the game of soccer for many years, as a player and a coach / trainer; and I’ve met many “not so talented” players who went much further than the “talented” ones. The main difference was in their desire and determination [i.e. strong intrinsic motivation] to pursue their dreams, their willingness to sacrifice & work relentlessly [i.e. excellent work ethic and discipline] in order to achieve, their ability to handle and successfully “filter out” various distractions by focusing only on what’s critical [maintaining excellent concentration], as well as their ability to view and handle the tough times with the right winning attitude to “stay on course” and handle adversity against all odds [ self-belief ]. In short, these “less talented” soccer players developed strong mental skills and possessed an overall superior mental toughness.
During my soccer (playing and coaching) career, I have witnessed many “promising” players who dropped out or fell short of their presumed “soccer destiny”. I have been also observing many soccer players (and teams) during matches and witnessing consistent under achievement by these athletes. I am absolutely convinced that in many cases this “phenomenon” is largely due to poor mental preparation, lack of necessary mental skills and proper emotional control.
Practical customized training programs focus on the “psychological side” of the game for the more serious athletes who really want to take their game to the next level, realize their full potential and maximize their chances of “going all the way” in reaching their dreams.
